it’s a list i’ve always been meaning to write:
“30 things to do before i die in the next 10 years or so”
… and i figured my 30th birthday might be as good a day as any. some of the things i have already done and want to do again. a lot of the things have remained Good Intentions over the last decade and i want to keep them in mind as i look ahead to the next. in no particular order…
1) climb a mountain (and i don’t mean Mt. Pile o’ Textbooks)
2) learn a musical instrument (other than the recorder)
3) go to Germany, Egypt, Thailand, China, etc (i could fill another list with just places)
4) help with a dog rescue organization (i actually may have a rescue dog here on Nevis by Saturday… not quite sure what i’m getting myself into!)
5) become a doctor (naturally)
6) have kid(s) (eventually)
7) meditate a little every day (aka: read more poetry)
8) skydive
9) make good sushi (key word “good”)
10) scuba dive
11) go to the north & south poles (but not on the same trip)
12) dye my hair red (or pink or purple)
13) learn to sail
14) stretch every morning
15) write a novel (but not necessarily publish it)
16) elope (eventually)
17) become patient (not a patient)
18) eat more fruits & veggies (every day!)
19) eat less meat (and eat more fish)
20) learn to let others help me
21) drive less (ride more)
22) raise a dog from puppyhood (though after Maddy, i vowed i’d never do it again!)
23) stay fallen in love
24) stop being so hard on myself
25) learn another language (or just get better at French)
26) go skinny-dipping at night (been done, but definitely needs to be done again)
27) plant a tree every year on my birthday
28) visit Walden Pond
29) dance more often (not necessarily “more better”)
30) make my own home darkroom
… now that i’ve started, i could probably fill a list with 300* things i’d like to do in the next little while. it’s not an achievement list waiting to be crossed off one-by-one. it’s more like a reminder. how do you know if you’ve achieved everything you ever wanted if you don’t identify what it is you want? and how on earth would you even know where to start without a list?? ; ))
thank you guys SO SO much for all of the wonderful, lovely, marvelous birthday wishes on the previous post. you guys totally rock.
and you make it easier to be so far away from home on such a special day like today!
NOTE: today’s photo is from my 29th birthday (you can click on it to be taken to a few thoughts i had this time last year). looking at that picture, i marvel at how fast and short and long and quick the last 365 days have flown by. i can barely imagine how quick this next one is going to disappear…

Happy Birthday!
Love your list….
You make 30 look damn good, Jen! Happy birthday, my friend :)

Hi Jennifer! Great list! when you come to Germany, you should visit Holland too and you (and Jonathan) are welcome to be our guest at our place in Delft! :)
Funny, I plan to do this same kind of list soon — if for no other reason than to make myself more focused on what I want to accomplish instead of just wandering aimlessly through life.
And a rescue dog? You’ll love it! I’ve fostered several animals, both cats and dogs. It’s never easy when you have to say goodbye to them (part of the reason I now have 3 cats and a dog!), but no animal will ever be more grateful for your kindness and compassion.
i love these lists ~ so fun!! i highly recommend the skydiving ~ was beyond incredible :) i so need to make a list …
hope your birthday was beautiful, like you!! xox
happy happy birfday!
31. i love you and i think we are secret twins
32. everything on your list is either something i’ve done, need to do more of, or is on my list of things i need to do.
The years definitely go faster.
Wait to see how fast the next year & half go.
