Monday miscellany

humpty dumpty put herself back together again

the bike has turned out to be a brilliant idea and one of the things i look forward to in the morning almost as much as that first cup ‘o java. on the way home this afternoon, i was soaked. a guy (in his car) stopped me mid-ride and offered to rent me a Mitsubishi Lancer or Toyota Tercel for $300/month. i said i’d think about it. but i’m not really thinking about it. sure, a car would be nice to get into town regularly, but there is no way i’m giving up my daily ride.

i haven’t written a Living Lightly post for awhile and i’m embarrassed to admit my recycling habits have totally gone out the window. i have no idea where the recycling depot is and even if i did know, not a clue how i’d get my bottles and stuff there on the back of my bike… HOWEVER, i have become the most conservative paper user you will ever meet. it’s a pain in the butt for me to get to a stationary store and pick up more, so i use both sides top-to-bottom, side-to-side and even re-use scrap paper. stuff i would normally toss in a recycling bin at home has important study notes on it now! i even write out index card Q&As on scrap paper before copying them over because i only have a limited number.

just wait till i get to a stationary store though. i’m sure i’ll drop $100US and stock up so i can continue to wreak academic havoc on our planet’s lovely tree supply.

for the last week or 10 days, i’ve had really puffy eyes when i get up in the morning. even though i’m getting good hours of sleep, i figured the early mornings were taking their toll or something. then today i realized it might actually be allergies. going to take an antihistamine tonight and see if it makes any difference.

speaking of sleep and early mornings, i certainly don’t have to worry about snoozing past my alarm. there is a tiny transluscent-ish flesh coloured frog that likes to hang on the wall by one of my two bedroom windows. he is smaller than your thumbnail, but he is LOUD. his “TWEE TWEEE” sounds like a car alarm, starting up shortly after the sun goes down and without much of a rest before 5 or 6 am. a few times i’ve worn earplugs to help me fall asleep because the noise is so piercing.

inevitably, in the middle of the night, i’ll wake to a lull in the TWEEEs, assume he’s moved on to a better location, take the plugs out and roll over, falling back asleep. once my alarm wakes me up at the appropriate time, i’m tempted to snooze it and roll over again. but Frogger does a good job of making sure that doesn’t happen. he didn’t move on! he was just taking a break, silly. i can only fall asleep again if i put the earplugs back in and since i can’t be bothered, i might as well get up and go pee and start my day.

NOTE: i have to mention that, while Jonathan was here, he would go out with the headlamp at night, find the little guy and relocate him some where far, far away. within a day or two, he (or someone else) always made their way back to the exact same spot on the wall!

i received two postcards today for the fridge from the loverly wwcutie and jillian! thank you for brightening my mailbox!

missing Jonathan. a lot. but, you know. this is the way it has to be right now. he’s preparing a giant care package that is totally going to rock and i’m super duper excited!

Having lived in the USVI for many years, my observations with island recycling were the locals leave it at the curb…forever.

When I first moved to St Croix, in the mid 80s, my biggest shock was the amount of trash that was along the side of the roads and in neighborhoods that were off the tourist track. Pretty much the same thing in the British Virgins and the Bahamas. I never sailed as far a Nevis, but i suspect the conditions are similar. It’s a mindset I never understood.

So FREAKING jealous. I just finished day two of my technology program and already i’m exhausted. How are you doing?? I was reading on the MUA site somewhere that you can go right through the summer with your classes…are you planning on doing this? As always, looking forward to more updates :)

[...] as most of you know, the story has a happy ending. i stubbornly got on my bike every morning and stubbornly pushed myself into the blasting wind, stinging rain, and blinding sun. and i came to absolutely adore my morning ride. i LOVED it. in fact, the days when i had a flat tire or the road was washed out due to heavy overnight rains were downright disappointing.
