Gone soft

red-plate rental 470

it was raining (POURING) earlier this morning and all i could think was “gee, i’m glad i’m not riding my bike today.”

what a wimp.

i am now renting a car. a dark green 4-door Suzuki Escudo to be more precise. i expect to keep it through hurricane season and plan to hop back on my beloved Brodie Dynamo sometime in the fall. by that time i’ll probably need a little exercise to get rid of the extra pounds gained from sitting around on my butt all day.

yes Rob (if you’re reading this), i brought Kensington all the way down here. he was a great guardian angel in the old truck for years and years, so i figured he’d appreciate being reinstated. i need all the protection from flat tires, unpredictable livestock, and other crazy drivers that i can get.

    You’re renting?
How long are you going to drive the car?

How does leasing or buying (second hand maybe) a car compare to renting?

    Just curious :-)

    yes, renting!

hurricane season is predicted to last from June through November. i rode my bike last fall just fine and hope to do so again this year.

not sure of the leasing options, but buying straight-up means you are likely stuck with a secondhand car. this is definitely a better option for trying to get a little money back when you leave the island (ie: sell to a fellow student), but leaves you stuck with the inconvenience (and HIGH $$$) of trying to fix anything that breaks down.

with renting, you pay a little more each month (with no chance of return at the end, obviously) but don’t have to deal with flat tires or the hassles/delay of dealing with local mechanics and getting parts to the island.

for me, my time is worth more than money right now. and since i will only be driving for a few months, i opted to rent. : )

    Hi Jennifer,
I finished basic sciences in August 07. If I had to do it over again, I would rent. As you said, time is more important than money while you’re there.
I discovered your site when I was studying for step 1. Today, I was going over my “favorites” folder in explorer and rediscovered your blog. I’ve enjoyed your stories and photos. Keep up the good work.
    I miss Nevis!

Great idea. Wimp, hardly. Would not like to have to figure out how to get to class in a hurricane.
By the way from what I saw that was a great truck.
