“Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.”
~ Abigail Adams

“Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.”
~ Sir Winston Churchill

diligently climbing my mountain one step at a time. with the full realization that i’ll never really get to The Top.

i hate the sacrifices i have to make (and force my loved ones to make). but this never-ending steep mountain path is why i chose to study medicine in the first place. as long as i have the energy to put one foot in front of the other, i am following my bliss.

besides, who wants to get to the top? then you just have to turn around and come back down!

Climb that mountain and make me proud!!! I will be waiting at the bottom to catch you if you ever decide to fall or ever need to come back down. I will wait forever and ever and ever : ) !!!!!!!!!

Two things I’ve learned about my own personal journey to gain my education (an education that is a blip in comparison to the journey to doctorhood), are

    1. the journey is blissfully enlightening
    2. the sacrifices that I make and the ones that those around me make in my honour are beautiful in and of themselves.

BCWB my husband hates you….you make him look bad. teehee….. it’s only cause I keep telling him “this guy says such nice things to his g.f.”

I don’t think there’s a top. They just keep moving the finish line. It’s like that old story with that Greek dude that was pushing that rock up a mountain. It’s was like some sort of punishment, might have been in Hades…okay, so I’m not up on my classical Greek literature. Leave me alone, I’m only a medical student.

I try to get to the top to at least be able to see the view…even for only a short time…the climb is almost always worth it.

  6. Brad Says:

Congratulations on entering 4th semester! You are at a great point…finally getting to work with real live patients allows you to incorporate so many of the special things that make “you…you” into the experience. Doesn’t it feel great to be touching people instead of just touching books? If a smidgen of your positive attitude rubs off on your patients, they will all be better off for having had you as their med student / doctor. Just wait until clinical clerkships! You are going to love them! Enjoy!

  7. sarah Says:

    umm…Brad…

  8. sarah Says:

    oops
the rest of that was something about touching patients and feeling good..
    (and how that is bad)

  9. darlene Says:

getting to the top is over-rated … its all those cool winds and bright berries and beautiful discoveries on the way up ~ that’s the stuff … especially when you deviate slightly from the same old worn path ;-)

    xo

Ouch! Thank you Sara for pointing out that my motivational message could, in fact, seem a little creepy if taken in the wrong context. Please be assured that it was meant in the most professional manner possible, and that I was alluding to the altruistic traits that drive most of us into medicine. Nonetheless, you made me chuckle at how clumsily I wrote my comment. :)

  11. jammie dodger Says:

sarah, you can be my “patient” anytime. I’ll warm my hands up before showing you my bedside manner.

Brad, I thought your comment was most motivational, not creepy at all.

  12. Steve Says:

    Agreed, there is no top.

I think my next vacation will be to a beach whose dress code follows that same principle.

  13. alexia Says:

Mayhem, Sisyphean is the name you are looking for.

Also, Brandon, stop stealing everyone’s exclamation points. You only need one in order to exclaim.

  14. BCWB Says:

    Noted! : ) ; )

  15. jhawke Says:

alexia – actually, my dad is the exclamation mark police around here. i’ll pass along your concern.

but since you don’t seem to need any sort of emotion in your comments, i’ll feel free to re-distribute your quota. you must be a regular bundle ‘o fun on email and instant messaging.

  16. alexia Says:

I am! Though, I am anti-smileys and emoticons, so we would probably clash.

  17. BCWB Says:

    !

  18. BCWB Says:

Hmmm…. Well we are clashing then because I am all about emotion especially when it is my J climbing the mountain and me cheering her on… So I guess I will just keep throwing my emotion at J with all my love! : ) : D : P

  19. BCWB Says:

BTW, You shouldn’t be anti-smileys it isn’t good for your blood pressure… shhhh…don’t tell anyone but I learned that in Pharmacology!

  20. sarah Says:

Brad: your second comment was creepier than your first!

    Jammie: I prefer cold hands

  21. jhawke Says:

i just ran my previous comment through BabelFish and this is what came out:

“back off, chick. don’t force me to defend my man with my vicious cat claws.”

  22. jammie dodger Says:

    Is it pick-on-people-with-names-beginning-with-a-B day?

    Just for alexia: !-)

sarah: cold hands… but a warm heart?

  23. BCWB Says:

I have my money on J! I have seen the fired up side as well as the beautiful side. I will stay on the beautiful side as often as possible. She is a tough sexy babe that can do anything she puts her mind to! : )
