i have said it before and i will continue saying it until my voice is hoarse: Nevis is a wonderfully friendly and safe place to live, but

… be sure to take the same safety precautions — both with your home security and personal being at night — that you would in any city back home in North America.

it is probably even more important to ensure you are extra vigilant and responsible for your safety and security here than at home. at home you are much more familiar with the neighbourhoods and customs than down here. we may be on the island for 20+ months and might feel very settled in, but we still are tourists in a lot of ways.

here is a compilation of tips for traveling to Caribbean destinations from the US State Department.

and here is some information for American citizens on what to do if you are a victim of a crime overseas.

Lots of good and interesting information. A lot of the problems here stem from the old saying… Treat others as you expect to be treated. Many people down here seem to forget that. No matter how you feel you are still in their country and need to respect that. I know I was a victim. I had over $6,000 US worth of things stolen from my old house. The Nevis police department did their part and got my stuff back. It is still being held as evidence, but at least I know it is there and that I will get it back at some point. Stay safe and stay smart about your interactions with others.
