$125/month for EVERYTHING

UPDATE: apparently the woman removed her blog (thanks for the tip, Jillian). something about reaching national news was a bit too much, i guess.

awesome. just awesome.

i’ll be keeping up with this lady to look for tips and tricks to keep down my bulging student debt. rather sadly, i can’t even begin to imagine what it would be like to live on only $1500 a year… can you?

That’s about £1000. I definitely spend (way) more than that a year on non essentials!

    PS I finally updated!

Hearing about people brave enough to take on these huge challenges is inspiring, thanks for mentioning this family. Their story is new to me and I enjoyed reading it. Don’t think I could do it.

My cat costs more than that! Sadly enough. Vet bills ain’t cheap.

I’ve cut down my expenses drastically since unvoluntarily switching from full-time to contract work, but $1500 of non-shelter expenses would only go a couple months. I put my hermetic lifestyle expenses (housing, food, not much fun) down at a minimum $2K per *month*.

Damn, though, if someone else can do it, good on them.

I spend more than 1500$ in one month…

um … yeah, like alexia, i definitely spend more than $1500 in one month. maybe i need to check my reality … um. yeah.

I spend $1,000 a month on rent alone… not even feasible here on lovely Nevis!! : ) No rent under $500 a month and we are here 4 months not to mention you will have to pay for food and a car and travel back to the US or Canada after classes… no chance!!

well these people aren’t including rent/mortgage in that figure, nor are they including transportation costs or bills. All it looks like to me is that they are spending 1500 on ‘incidentals’ (although food would be a huge incidental). They also started with a huge stockpile of stuff.
Obviously nobody could do that if they were including the true cost of living for a year.

i could own my house, walk everywhere, eat out of a basement stocked full of bomb shelter preserves, make my own prescription medicine from scratch, cut my own hair, turn my clothes inside out instead of washing them, use candles…

… and STILL spend more than $125/month.

  9. sarah Says:

How??? What on earth would you be buying if you weren’t buying food, medication, laundry detergent, electricity, haircuts, etc?
However my only point to Brandon was that he commented on it being impossible because of rent, transportation, etc. I was pointing out that the family doing this wasn’t including those types of costs in their 1500 figure.

dog food, of course. ; )

my only (counter) point was that no matter how much of a head-start you have (or how many living expenses are excluded), i really don’t think limiting yourself to $125/month would ever be easy.

especially if you have 2 kids.

the linked blog is gone :(

my counter-counter point is that once again I wasn’t suggesting it was easy…it just wasn’t/isn’t what brandon made it seem like.
But you definitely got me on the dog food, you’d have to trade her in for a cat. Their food is 50 cents a day

PS: what’s up with all your flight drama? You and Brandon should drop out of school, recruit your sister and open a chartered flight company, flying students from the Island to Florida or something. You’d make a fortune!!

*happy that Firefox has built-in spell checking*

    Preposterous.

  15. BCWB Says:

Hmmmmm…. I actually really like that idea. I would love to sit in Florida and make a fortune. I would have to now that we owe so much back for school!!
