MED 5 Block 2 [re-cap]

[block 1]
“Get happiness out of your work or you may never know what happiness is.”
~ Elbert Hubbard
pathology
- pituitary
- thyroid
- parathyroid
- pancreatic
- adrenal gland
- vulva, vagina, cervix
- endometrium & uterus
- ovaries
- disorders of pregnancy
- breast
- pediatric pathology
- lower urinary tract
- male genital tract & prostate
>> most interesting thing learned: to treat parathyroid hyperplasia, the surgeon removes three of the four parathyroid glands and then re-implants a piece of the remnant gland into the patient’s forearm to serve as the sole source of PTH. cool!
intro to clinical medicine
- altered mental state (acute vs. chronic)
- seizures
- syncope (neuro vs. non-neuro)
- dizziness & vertigo
- headache
- shock
- fever & rash
>> most interesting thing learned: we did a ton of neuro this block and i felt like a kid in a candy store with the Dean on his neurological rounds at the hospital. by far the most interesting things i learned were related to watching him take histories and perform exams on new patients.
oh, and if anyone can tell me what might cause a person (with normal sodium levels) to seize within 15 or 30 seconds of water deprivation, i would love to know.
