THE dress

i bought the first one i tried on.

i mean, i tried on a zillion others after it — you know, just to make sure — but the first one was “it”. knowing my options would be limited because of my shorter time frame (i told the lady “i need a dress for August 1st” and she said “this year?”) i walked into the store and tried to describe what i thought i might like. she looked at my height and size and grabbed one “off the rack” that had just been discontinued the day before.

my mom cried when i put it on. i cried when i looked in the mirror.

it was THE one.

i can’t give any details because i want it to be a true surprise for Brandon and i’m not versed in the bridal lingo anyway. i have no idea if it has a sweetheart neckline or a dropped waist or whatever. i know it’s white. and it’s pretty.

it’s also too big and needs to be altered. being “off the rack” means a lot of other girls have tried it on and it sat on a mannequin with pins in the back for however long. so it can use a little TLC. but it’s perfectly imperfect. sorta like you and me. ; )

since we are going with a down-on-the-farm local wedding, i would prefer to give as much of the wedding fund as i can to small-town local businesses. Judi and Shayna (mother-daughter team) at Judi’s Wedding World on Main Street in Moose Jaw have been in the same spot for 26 years and know their way around a wedding dress. the store doesn’t look like much from the outside, but i’m not one to judge a book by its’ cover. they take good care of their gowns and they’ll take good care of you.

my shoes were shipped on Monday and any other little details are falling into place nicely. sorry, no photos. you’ll have to come to the wedding or wait until after the big day!

PS: whoops. i lied. : D

I stuck with local businesses for my wedding too, and it made me very happy to do so. Have fun with your whirlwind wedding planning!

I’m so glad you found your dress! Heck! I even got teary eyed when I read about it :P Having gone wedding shopping with Heidi when she was looking for her dress I know how much of a hassle it can be… then again she was looking for a dress that would be ready to wear in 2 months and she was 6 months pregnant :)

I’m so happy to hear that you’re supporting the smaller businesses, and even happier that you’ve found the perfect dress! I can’t wait until you post pictures :)

hats off to you for focusing on small-town local businesses, IMHO there’s a lot of value in those mom & pop shops, the service, the quality and the attention to you, the consumer.

I volunteer for The Brides’ Project in Toronto (as webmaster + photographer but I help out in the shop, too) — we get gown donations from salons, sell them to the public, and donate the proceeds to cancer charities. I hope we can eventually expand out west, because there is really a demand out there for a socially-conscious bridal salon! Also, I would be closer to home…

… and if I weren’t already shooting a wedding Aug 1, I would totally fly out there on my own money to shoot yours for free because I love farm weddings!

Just another exciting part of getting married! That’s so wonderful you bought local… I’ll admit I went to a bridal shop, found THE dress and then ordered it online for much cheaper :) I felt guilty but then again, I don’t think of anything in Calgary as a small town family business.

Such an amazing and memborable moment to share with your mom! YAY!!

Oh and I LOVE the invitation – yours will be in the mail in the next few weeks!

My sister got engaged on Good Friday and is also getting married early August. The first dress she tried on was THE dress as well. She did the same thing: tried on a zillion only to return to the very first. So glad that the details are falling together so smoothly for you in such a short time. Sounds like good karma, luck, blessings… whatever you call it, you’ve got it good. :) Love you!
