i finally got to talk to Brandon in the wee hours of this morning. he was en route from another hotel via another airport shuttle to another flight. his final flight home.

after spending Tuesday re-taking the comprehensive exit exam with 22 of our classmates (an exam that sounds 10 times harder than the one we all wrote in April – ugh), he went back to court on Wednesday.

yah, doesn’t dressing up in a suit in the humid mid-hurricane season Caribbean heat sound like something you’d want to do the day after an extremely stressful exam? me neither.

but remember Brandon’s accident last July? and the initial verdict decided against him due to improperly filed police reports and a missing court summons?

justifiably frustrated that he had to pay $10,000EC for something that wasn’t his fault, Brandon sought the counsel of a Nevisian lawyer and she offered to do the legwork and paperwork for him. a year later, that $500EC investment has paid off. knowing he was coming back to Nevis for the re-write (everything happens for a reason, right?) she managed to get him a date with the Magistrate. he’ll probably have more to say about the experience (and i hope he’s not mad at me for spoiling the punchline), but the Magistrate’s words speak loudest:

“Judgment in favour of the plaintiff for $11,600EC.”

so. awesome.

the judgment included payment for his legal fees and i have no idea when he’ll see the money, but isn’t that just amazing? he is only the second student to ever win a court case on Nevis.

in other news, we have a higher-up at Travelocity calling us these days. yesterday’s phone call was to ensure we were aware that he was following up on our refund. now it’s apparently being processed in chunks: taxes first, then via separate airlines. i’ll believe it when i see it, but at least it’s some movement in the right direction.

also, my wonderful sister has offered to see if she and her hard-working, wrench-turning job qualify as a co-signer for my Royal Bank Professional Student Line of Credit. unfortunately, sometime while i was away from Canada, the RBC decided to change it’s lending policy to out-of-country students and i no longer qualify to pay for my education because i don’t have things like, um, assets or a job. i need someone with established credit and an income to trust that i will eventually finish school and will eventually get a job and pay everything i owe back. my sister trusts me.

and lastly, perhaps the best single line sentence one could ever hope for from the StudentAid BC Check Your Application Status website: “You will be receiving the maximum amount for your study period.” they forgot to say “oh yah, and it’s $5,000 more than we gave you last year annnd $3,000 is grant money that you don’t even have to pay back! hah!”

i prayed for money to fall from the sky and when it rains, i guess it really does pour.

halle-freakin-lujah.

Good news comes in chunks, I find.

It seems I don’t have to pay $10K of my student loans back though nobody ever said “you get X dollars back for being awesome” or something. I certainly appreciate that, as my loans are big enough, and only half paid off 5 years later.

That is so awesome. I can only imagine what sorts of great things are coming our way. If travelocity comes back to us then we are back in the black instead of running in the dark red : ) Sorry accounting in my head this morning : )
