Probably most likely will never ever go into nephrology

so, in all the hubbub i totally forgot to mention that i got my score back for the USMLE Step 1.

did i pass? yep.

did i do as well as i wanted? nope.

the actual 3-digit score is posted on my password-protected grades page for anyone interested. i know i share a lot of stuff with you guys and i considered just posting it here, but it sort of feels akin to pulling out my underwear drawer, dumping it on the floor and posting a photo of it for you. step scores are pretty personal. whether you fail by 1 point or pass by 45, that silly exam has the potential to make or break a lot of dreams.

suffice it to say, the pre-test estimates were bang on. and i’ll be one of those students that land a great residency “in spite of” not because of my step score.

i’m not complaining though. someone has to fill out the middle of that bell curve.

images: on top is the Kaplan QBank tally before the test and below is the actual performance map from the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). on almost every other NBME practice test i took, i had 3 or 4 of those fancy little asterisk things. i like fancy little asterisk things.

You are going to be excellent at everything you do. Both you and I know that. I am super proud of the score you got and I only hope to be able to come close.

Oh…that number…its as silly as the one on my scale. It matters but it does not define me…..and this one doesn’t define you either sugar lips.

They should just tell you pass or fail. You pass!! Now be excited or I’ll have to play doctor on your blog again. lol

    Bleh…kidneys are *totally* overrated anyways!

You’ll land a great residency because you are an intelligent, fast-learning, well-rounded student / human being / doctor! :-D

Be proud of your accomplishment, my dear! You rock!

i like what kristy said about the scale, if i defined myself by that, well .. i’d never leave the house ;-)

a good doctor is so much more than the numbers of this test and you my dear are going to be a most excellent fabulous doctor, uh huh, that i know :-)

you a class act my dear and i hope you celebrate the fact that you are living out your dreams in a big way, hugs! xo

Funny, I don’t see a “listening skills” section on that practice test. Isn’t that what separates the great doctors from the merely skilled?

You’ll be awesome. And ditto the “who needs kidneys” sentiment. Everybody already has a spare, right?

Because I am a UK doc and I do not understand this score and scale malarky I shall just say congratulations ;)

CONGRATS! And holy crap, can you please stop copying my answers?! No crap, your score report looked so much like mine that I actually whipped it out and compared. They were almost identical! I also did the worst on renal/urinary! Anyway, a huge congrats! You did it! Yipee!! :)
