a med school blog

Brandon proved today that he isn’t very good at relaxing. He had the entire day off for the first time in months and I was sadly disappointed to come home and find him starting his next MBA class instead of working on a good butt groove in the couch.

I, on the other hand, did a great job of enjoying some serious downtime in December. But now that the next step of my medical licensing exam is just around the corner, it’s time to get back to the books.

I have found that coming home to study in the evenings after 8 or 10 hours in the hospital is a lot different than 8 or 10 hours in a classroom. My brain is fried. I just want to veg and crochet and absorb everything that happened over the course of the day. I would rather shove toothpicks under my fingernails than roll through just 50 Q&As in a test question bank. Ugh.

So I have to switch it up. I’m going to try getting back to those 4am mornings I was so fond of on Nevis and punch out a couple of hours of studying before hitting the hospital.

I had considered cutting down on my morning caffeine in the new year, but I think that idea might have to wait until after I finish med school.

    Hello Jster!

I’m not sure if your school has different requirements, but just thought I’d give you some feedback on your Step 2 study schedule. For the purposes of matching in 2010, you really just need to have taken your Step 2 CK by July…August at the latest. I noticed that you’re taking it in April, and before you have your surgery rotation. If it is at all possible, you might want to consider taking it in June or July after your surgery rotation (you will learn a LOT in surgery that is on CK…or at least I did!). Also, you will find it WAY easier to study for the CK during an elective rotation (the hours are so much shorter) rather than your cores (c’est difficile!). This is what I did, and it made my study schedule super easy. Just thought I’d give some friendly advice. :) But I know you’re like me and prolly have this sched picked for a reason! Happy new year!

There is nothing wrong with starting on the MBA and getting ahead of myself for a change. Remember my Resolutions. I love this painting that we found of the place you are working and I am certain that whenever you decide to take the exam it will be the best time for you to take it. I am so excited for you to take the next step in the process. Keep the caffeine flowing, it is the best drug out on the market!! : )
