How to name your baby

Overheard at Wal-Mart…
Stranger: You have a cute baby girl.
Baby Mama: That’s my baby Tequila.
Stranger: Tequila?
Baby Mama: Tekela. T-E-K-E-L-A
Stranger : Tekela? That’s a cute name. What does it mean?
Baby Mama: That’s the drink we was drinkin’ when we created Tekela.
Stranger: That’s strange. My name’s Miller.

photo: We’ve received this book twice already. So it must be good! The second one (Aunt Nancy’s) we traded in at Target for another by the same author. Brandon likes to wander down the boys’ toys aisle and pick up little matchbox cars and smile, “He can get one of these every time we go shopping if he’s good!”
My response is always, “He can get a book every time we go shopping if he’s good!”

Check out some of the Boynton CDs, too. Every parent needs kids music that doesn’t suck. Philadelphia Chickens is my favorite:

Don’t worry as soon as Creighton has his SSN. he is signed up for life membership in the NRA. His first gun is an AR15 A 2 in 22 long rifle. So the trip to Wally World will have to include a trip down the sports isle for ammo, a side trip for match book cars: but on second thought how about getting all that stuff from Grandpa’s and Grandma’s basement there is only about 5 huge boxes of that stuff. And yes Mom-to-be we will encourage all the reading of fine literature. But the most important right to protect us from our own government and patriotism for country is foremost.

Grandpa: Your grandson is going to be half canadian and therefore will have no interest in guns, government corruption, or patriotism. He will however like literature, be intelligent, aware of world events and other countries, and enjoy hockey (despite his football loving parents).

Gah! What Sarah said! I don’t mean to offend anyone, but please do tell me that Howard is kidding around. Because if he’s not kidding then he has offended me. Who talks about taking an as-yet unborn child shopping for a gun? Let alone his apparently *first* gun! Seriously? Who does that?! Please tell me that he was kidding. Otherwise I weep for the future of the United States of America.

Hey, if this is how Canadians react to Grandpa B’s plans, you can only imagine what I as a European should say. So I’d better keep mum.

Sarah, Dr. K., and maxivida, I suppose you care about Jennifer, don’t you? Than, why in this world you thake the liberty to say what you guys said? That’s not LOVE, I ma sure Jennifer suffers. Granpa not only is FAMILY, he may support this wonderful family. If you are so tollerant as you say, keep quiet, be tollerant with granpa too.
Talking about EU, who cares? I am from EU, and I am sick and tired of it. This is AMERICA.

When I was growing up, my dad didn’t let my brothers have toys that even *looked* like guns. My grandparents are pacifist Mennonites and my grandpa was passed over for med school in the 1950s the first time he applied because they were reserving seats for veterans. We don’t hunt. I’ve never lived near a shooting range. And I didn’t grow up in school reciting the 2nd amendment.
However, middle America has a very different history than the middle of Canada.
For those of you that are melodramatically weeping for the future of the USA, you can sleep easy knowing it (for better or worse) rests on the same shoulders as those who founded the country: patriots with a lot of guns that were willing to fight other Americans for what they believe in. If you don’t believe me, the History Channel has a great series out right now:
http://www.history.com/shows/america-the-story-of-us
They have to put up signs in certain places down here to let you know guns aren’t allowed. Why? Because allowing guns is the *norm* and (if you pass a special class), you can even legally carry the gun so no one else can see it! How crazy is THAT?!
I guess my point is that even though I’m only 1500 miles from home, I’m a long way from Canada.
Would it be weird if I was in Japan and my father-in-law was buying the baby its first samurai sword?
Maybe. But it’s part of their culture. I’m still a foreigner here and while owning guns is a foreign concept to me, it’s not my place to judge another country’s culture.
I don’t really want to get into a discussion about whether i’m pro- or anti-gun. I’m just hoping this baby will grow up with the best of both worlds: knowing how to ice skate AND pitch a baseball. You know, important stuff.

@ Ana: I’m not originally from the EU (although I didn’t even mention the EU, just being European; there’s more to Europe than the EU) but I chose to live here, just like you chose to live in America. I respect your choice, and it would be only civilised to expect that you respect mine (so much for “caring” for one country or another).
What I wrote was a comment referring to another comment by Jennifer’s father-in-law. It had nothing to do with Jennifer directly and I’m mystified by your chain of deduction that leaves her “suffering” because of it. Having read her comment above, I don’t think that her feelings are hurt by anything that has been written here: on the contrary, like a mature and intelligent human being she’s chosen to make peace with the culture she’s coming from and the culture she lives in. She’s certainly not telling anyone to keep quiet while preaching tolerance. And this is not America, this is the World Wide Web, thank you very much.

Sorry I didn’t mean to start a firestorm Jen. But you know I love you and all I’m saying is It is the pioneering spirit of my ancestors who by the way came from Canada; when Canada was still fighting the French. Sorry Dad B
My And Brandon’s Forefathers fought the Indians in the Sand Hills of the Nebraska territory to settle here when the closest rail head was in Omaha a mere 435 miles away. Fort Sidney had just been established. Our family has a very rich heritage in this area and it was all won with hard work and being prepared for the worst. The rest of you may want the government hand outs but I prefer to make my own way and that the government stay the hell out of my way. HOWARD D. BROWN
