I have a paperweight on my desk without any papers underneath it. It is brushed metal, satisfactorily heavy, and has smooth curves that fit nicely in the palm of your hand. If you were to see it there, sitting on my desk, you might reach out to pick it up. Maybe to see how heavy it was. Maybe to read the inscription. Maybe just to caress the pleasurable shape absentmindedly while we talked about something else.

It says:

May you live every day of your life. – Jonathan Swift

A friend gave it to me almost two years ago. I think I’ve done my share of living in that time.

But I am frustrated — infuriated even — at my inability to fully enjoy each day. I wish the inscription read:

May you love every day of your life.
